relationships-imgRecently, I was talking to a friend of mine who owns a small business. He was telling me of some troubles he was having with a few of his clients.

Before I go on, I must tell you that I have also been a small business owner in the past. One of the businesses I owned was a consulting company where we worked with small businesses to help them do more things, better. Basically, I was a business coach.

As my friend talked to me about his issues, I listened intently and then asked him one very important question. I asked what he was doing to nurture the relationship with these clients. I am not going to bore you with details of the conversation but as we talked through that he came away with a better grasp of things and a plan of action.

Technology is a funny thing. While we rely on it to do our jobs, communicate with clients friends, family and so forth, many of us, even me, take the support of today’s technologies for granted. You drive it to and from work, in carpools, to take the kids to school, baseball, ballet and soccer practice. Cars need gas, oil, and tire rotations-- basic maintenance so we are safe and our vehicles work properly.  We usually take them to the dealer or to an auto shop that we trust or have a relationship with. We spend a lot of money on our cars and we rely on them to do what we need them to do, when we need them to do it.  Why would you do any less with your business?
